Custer and the great food problem
For spring break my family decided to go to Custer South Dakota. So far we have gone to a mammoth dig site, went to the crazy horse monument, and are planning to go to mount Rushmore and several caves. We started with the five hour drive like usual for roadtrips, and got to our first motel. We settled in, and got ready to go to the mammoth dig site the next morning. The mammoth dig site was very enjoyable and cool. Seeing all of the fossils jutting out of the rocks from which they were excavated, a bright pop of color and movement compared to the rock. One of my favorite parts was the fact that there were random objects like Dixie cups lying around for various excavation purposes. This includes random push pins in the rocks to mark things.
Next, we went to the Crazy Horse Memorial. Its construction had started sixty years ago, and will be complete around sixty years from now. Even though it is not done it is still amazing to see how much rock they were able to blast away from the mountain, and how realistic they can make parts of it. They had a lot of museums based off of the sculptor's life and it was interesting to learn about him. The best part was that I got a free mountain shard from where they had blown it up! The food problem was that everywhere in Custer the food services had closed down for the winter, and all that were left were the super greasy restaurants. This means that we need to move hotels again to stay in rapid city so we can have good food. This adds an hour to all of our drives because rapid city is over an hour away from all of the sites we want to see. Overall, I am really excited to see what the rest of the trip has in store for us, regardless off the drive!

I went to South Dakota a few years ago and it was really fun, we went to Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore and several monuments. You make it very easy to follow what you've already done and you are still going to do. I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip now that the drive is over! Great slice!

ReplyDeleteWhoah. This brings back memories. But it was still not my fault when Aubrey convinced us to stay in the shop for an hour looking at stone dinosaurs-- you know what, never mind. But nice slice. This is very descriptive and true. S. Dakota is a really cool place, especially Custer.

We went to South Dakota last year on our spring trip. This brings back memories, of Aubrey and rocks. These were the Pre-Robert days. Those days are dead now. They were made into TEA! Moving on, Nice Slice!
